Troubleshooting Guide: Fix MMDVM Hotspot OLED, Boot, and WiFi Connection Issues

Troubleshooting Guide: Fix MMDVM Hotspot OLED, Boot, and WiFi Connection Issues

When using your MMDVM hotspot device, you may occasionally encounter issues such as a non-functional OLED screen, boot failures, or missing WiFi networks. Many users have reported similar problems with new units, after system updates, or during initial setup. In this guide, we’ve compiled the most common user-reported issues and official, field-tested troubleshooting steps drawn from our product technical documentation to help you resolve them efficiently.

Most Common Issues Reported by Users
Based on customer feedback, the vast majority of problems fall into four core categories:
1. OLED Screen Abnormalities
Screen persistently shows "pi-star unconfigured" even after following setup steps
OLED stays completely black with no display output
Screen gets stuck on "Initializing" and makes no further progress
2. Boot & Indicator Light Faults
Solid green power light paired with a slow-flashing red status light
Device fails to complete boot sequence, even with a properly connected power supply
3. WiFi Connectivity Failures
The "pi-star" setup network does not appear in any device’s WiFi list
Device cannot connect to home WiFi after initial configuration
4. Persistent Issues After SD Card Changes
Problems remain even after reformatting the SD card, buying a brand-new SD card, or reflashing the system image

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting Solutions
We recommend working through these steps in order to narrow down the root cause and fix your issue.

1. Basic Pre-Checks: Power Supply & SD Card
Most boot and stability issues trace back to power or storage problems. Always start here:
Use a compliant power source:
Power the hotspot with a standard 5V/2A wall power adapter. Do not power it via a computer USB port — insufficient current will cause incomplete booting, unstable performance, and WiFi failures.
Rule out SD card / system corruption:
Corrupted system files are the single most common cause of boot loops and indicator light errors. Download the official stable Pi-Star image (https://www.pistar.uk/downloads/) and reflash it to your micro SD card using Raspberry Pi Imager or BalenaEtcher. Remove and reinsert the SD card firmly to eliminate poor contact.

2. Fix OLED Screen Issues (Unconfigured / Black / Stuck on Initializing)
In almost all cases, an unresponsive or "unconfigured" OLED is caused by incorrect system settings, not a hardware defect.

Apply the correct display and modem configuration (core fix):

  • Access the Pi-Star dashboard via http://pi-star.local (or your device’s local IP) and log in with default credentials: username pi-star, password raspberry.
  • Navigate to the Configuration page:
For Modem Type, select STM32-DVM/MMDVM_HS-Raspberry Pi Hat (GPIO).
For Display settings, set Type to OLED, Port to /dev/ttyAMA0, and Nextion Layout to G4KLX.
  • Save and apply changes, then wait for the device to reboot. The OLED will activate automatically once the correct settings load.

If the screen is stuck on "Initializing":

  • Check the SVC status LED on the hotspot board. If the SVC light does not flash at all during power-on, the hotspot board may have a hardware fault.
  • Note: The WPSD system may have compatibility issues with some OLED configurations. If you are running WPSD and the OLED fails to work, switch to the official Pi-Star system to test.

3. Fix Boot Failures (Solid Green Light + Slow Flashing Red Light)
A solid green power light with a slow-flashing red light means the device is receiving power but cannot fully load the operating system.

  • Test with a wired Ethernet connection:
Connect the hotspot directly to your router’s LAN port via Ethernet cable before powering on. Check your router’s connected device list:
If "pi-star" appears: The core system is working normally, and the problem is isolated to WiFi configuration.
If "pi-star" does not appear: The system image is corrupted, and you need to reflash the SD card.
  • Reflash the official Pi-Star image: Follow the SD card instructions in Section 1 to restore a clean, working system.

4. Fix WiFi Not Appearing / Connection Failures

Critical compatibility note: All MMDVM hotspots only support 2.4GHz WiFi networks. They will not detect or connect to 5.8GHz WiFi.

Method 1: Configure WiFi via SD card (best for first-time setup)

  1. Go to the official Pi-Star WiFi Builder, enter your WiFi SSID and password, and generate the wpa_supplicant.conf configuration file.
  2. Drag this file into the boot partition of your micro SD card, reinsert the card, and power on the device. It will auto-connect to your WiFi within 1–2 minutes.

Method 2: Use the built-in temporary fallback WiFi

Our devices come preloaded with a temporary setup network: SSID m100, password abc12345.

Connect your computer or phone to this network, visit http://pi-star, log in, and add your home WiFi under the Wireless Configuration menu.

If the "pi-star" setup WiFi disappears after first use:

This is normal and intended behavior. Once the hotspot successfully joins your home WiFi, it stops broadcasting its own setup access point. You can still access the dashboard at http://pi-star.local on your home network.

5. When to Suspect a Hardware Issue
If you have completed all the steps above and still experience any of the following, your device likely has a hardware fault:

  • The SVC status LED never flashes at any point after power-on
  • No response from the device even after multiple system reflashes and multiple tested SD cards
  • OLED remains completely black with confirmed correct settings and a working system image
